"Your Life is a Gift!"
Derek Selinger's Youth Empowerment Talk
Derek Selinger believes that his life is a gift. This belief springs from several experiences in Derek’s life that include a few brushes with death. Throughout his life, these experiences have guided Derek’s thought processes as an artist, entertainer and speaker. Derek’s first near-death encounter happened prior to his birth. His mother was electrocuted while she was pregnant with him! The doctor’s prognosis was not optimistic. Fortunately, Derek was born healthy. Derek will share that he learned of the miracle surrounding his birth when he was 8 years old. At just 8 years of age Derek had 2 distinct thoughts. The first, that he has super powers (this could explain why he chose to become an illusionist)! The second, that his life is a gift! The fact that Derek is alive today is miraculous. Derek will explain to his audience, “Hopefully, you did not almost die before you were even born. Hopefully, you have not had a near-death experience. But, even if you don’t share these experiences…the same is true for you. Your life is a gift! The fact that you are here today is an awesome and miraculous event! Your…..life…..is…..a…..gift!” Derek will relate another (and now humorous) brush with death to re-enforce his message. He then offers 3 ideas to the students and youth to assist them in understanding how they can make the most out of their gift. These ideas are practical and specific, and provide the concepts required for easy adoption. Derek presents each idea to his audience with masterful storytelling combined with a relatable passion. Derek’s keynote presentation is often open and closed with a piece of illusion from one of his shows which provide context for the conversation. Derek will also provide a few moments for questions and interaction with the students and youth in his audience.
“A part of my purpose in speaking to students and youth is to empower them by helping them understand their ability to make important choices and to empower the positive influences in their lives. For instance, in an educational setting I purpose to empower the role their teachers play in their lives. In the context of a conference I strive to illustrate the importance of being involved in positive expressions of humanity. Empowering the students and youth of our culture to become all that they can be requires many voices. My voice is a catalyst to further thought and growth.” Derek Selinger will empower, entertain and educate the students and youth in your organization, school or conference in a way that will long be remembered after he has left.
